Passion is what brings your mind, body and soul together. There are many ways to go about finding and living out your passions. Stop and think about the things that help fire your passion. For some it is a daily meditation or prayer, a particular diet or just a good book. These are some things that help people find the balance they seek.

The idea of balance is an interesting one since it evokes different feelings. Passion is described by some as the same energy you feel when your soul is moved. Most people however, leave out the concept of the soul. Not surprisingly, this eastern mentality is not widely understood by those in the west.

When I say passion, I do not mean sexual passion. This is about spiritual passion. For me it’s taking a yoga class. It allows me to be present and teaches me patience and acceptance. At the same time, I gain strength and flexibility with each asana, or posture. It allows for time to take a deep breath and relax.

Passion is different things to many people. Here are five tips to help you decide:

1: Do your future goals inspire passion? Do they incorporate body, mind, and spirit? Making money is good, however, the process through which you make money should be what causes the passion. The journey is what makes the goal sweeter. A better choice would be something more esoteric, less mundane than money.

2: Remember your accomplishments. It’s best not to get down on yourself for every little mistake. By remembering how much good you do is one of the best ways to nurture your body, mind, and spirit. Continually beating yourself up is the fastest way to crush your soul. Eventually, the mind will dominate the body and you will get sick as a result.

3: Create happiness scenes. You can do this by meditating on a safe and happy place that you can create or a real place that you have been to or plan to go to sometime. When things in your life get tense, as they inevitably will, go to your safe place and meditate for a few moments.

4: Look forward to something. Having something to look forward to, like a trip or maybe just the weekend, helps tremendously. Downtime nurtures the body, mind and soul. Finding a new place to go can be exhilarating. Perhaps you can plan a weekend getaway to someplace you’ve always wanted to go. It might even help to go alone. This way there will be no interruptions and no one else to worry about.

5: Practice affirmations. Find one that will alleviate your stress and practice it. Pick three affirmations and say them out loud to yourself in the mirror everyday. This works! Just as I mentioned briefly in point number 2, if you continually tell yourself the same message over and over the mind eventually believes it. It will become true.

Three simple affirmations to get you started with are:

I am always safe and secure.

The universe provides everything I need.

My income is ever increasing.

Meditation has been around for many years and is practiced by many people and many religions, with Buddhism being the major religion for meditation. Buddhist meditation is an essential part of their lives as a goal towards the realization of Nibbana. Nibbana is considered as the ultimate goal in Buddhism. Although it’s important to understand the concept of meditation, it’s more vital that the individual learn the actual practice. Two different methods of Buddhist meditation are used in the religion. These two methods are ’samatha’ and ‘vipassana’.

Samatha means calm or tranquility, which is what the individual is striving to achieve. The beginning stages of samatha have to do with concentration of the mind as one-pointedness. Many different subjects that can be used such as water, light from a candle among many others. A very popular and widely used technique is anapanasati, which is mindfulness of breathing. The body and mind both gain their calmness from concentrating on the breath. Samatha is more than just concentration; however, they need to get rid of the five vices of anxiety, sensual desire, ill will, sloth and doubt. When this goal is reached through this form of Buddhist meditation, great happiness is gained but they still cannot reach Nibbana. This is where vipassana is necessary.

Vipassana is an entirely different approach of Buddhist meditation than samatha. This method rather than concentrating on other things is based on seeing things as they are without any aversions or attractions. Each thing that we do we need to acknowledge. If you are dusting the wall, you need to take note in your mind that you are dusting the wall. This first stage of vipassana is called bare awareness. Bare awareness goes with an insight of our inner lives. This method of Buddhist meditation is used with breathing meditation and can take one to the realization of Nibbana. Many use a combination of vipassana and samatha.

Meditation

I have been learning and practicing the art of meditation now for 20 years, but it is only recently that I have started to do it on a regular basis. I am finally learning the true benefits of mediation and how it can make an enormous improvement to your life and truly make you a better and happier person.

Meditation is all about finding the right balance. It’s about emptying your mind and transporting yourself to another place. A place where you can relax and just be in the moment, without the worries or work or the stressors of life. Meditation is about calming the mind to create a calmer you and in turn teaches you to calm your breath down, helping you to better manage your asthma.

If meditation is done correctly it can make an enormous difference to your attitude, your stress levels, your outlook on life and your breathing.

Mediation is a great way to unwind and to get some quality you time where no one is placing demands on you. It’s also a great way to improve your thinking, clear your mind and help you to solve problems. It takes the focus off your worries and onto yourself and calming your breath down very gently and slowly. Meditation teaches you that you can control your breathing and when you learn how to mediate properly you should be better equipped to calm your breath down, hence helping to settle your asthma. However, I always recommend doing any alternative treatments in conjunction with your regular asthma medication. If in the throws of an asthma attack, it’s important that the first thing you do is take your medication, then you can sit or lie down and try to calm yourself and your breathing down.

Meditation should help you to feel calmer and more relaxed. You may even find you are more in control, less aggressive and more willing to just ‘go with the flow’ about things you normally would stress over. Meditation helps you to accept things better and makes you see how much stress can affect and how poorly it makes you feel. Mediating for me makes me feel like I have had a nights sleep or an instant face lift-without the time, the cost or the pain thrown in.

I often find the answers to problems through my mediation. I might not know it then, but certain words come up or ideas, and I just think fair enough and dismiss it for now and then when I come out of my meditative state, I’ll think about them again or even write things down that have come into my head and sooner or later they make perfect sense. More often than not if I am stuck on something, I meditate and the answer almost always comes to me. It’s like now that my head is clear and nobody is hassling me, I can think straight and actually find the solution to the problem that has previously weighed so heavily on my mind.

Mediation without a doubt is my savor and nearly every single time calms me down and makes me realize that the problem or my stressor is not as bad as I first thought. Meditation for me is the reason I very rarely yell at my kids and nowadays I don’t get anywhere near as angry as I used to. Meditation is also the reason why my asthma has improved, even though I do still take my medication at times, it has without a doubt taught me to calm my breathing down and to stop myself from going into panic attacks and worsening my asthma.

Everyone tends to mediate differently and some may say that I don’t do it the right way, but for me it works and I have seen great results from it. I have also been practicing meditation for a very long time now and have tried many different ways of meditating and find the way I do it now to be the most effective with the best results.

Hence, I have written down my first 5 steps of learning to meditate and how to get your body into that nice relaxed state.

1. Lie down on the ground in a quiet room, that is slightly darkened but ideally not too dark. Lie down with your hands either by your side or resting on your chest. It’s a good idea to have your legs flat on the ground, open slightly with a pillow resting underneath your knees so as not to put too much pressure on your lower back. I sometimes even meditate with my knees up and my feet flat on the ground.

2. Have your eyes closed and very slowly take 3 deep breaths. This helps to center you, to calm you and to allow you to concentrate on you and your time. Just allow yourself to take note of your breath and how it very gently flows in and out of your body

3. Notice how your body connects with the floor, which parts touch the floor and which don’t. If any part of you is not quite comfortable shit around a little until you are completely comfortable and starting to feel relaxed.

4. Gently let each part of your body go. Start moving your head from side to side very slowly to loosen it up; then allow your shoulders to sink into the floor; relax your upper back and then slowly move down to your lower back and allow all the tension to just melt away; move down to your stomach area and just let it flop and hang there; next let your thighs fall to the side slightly and feel your upper legs relax and feeling loose; your knees too can flop out to the side and sink into the pillow, lastly slowly wriggle your toes and your feet and just allow all the tension to drain away from them.

5. Once you feel your body nice and relaxed, I now want you to imagine your favourite place. Somewhere that is just for you and only you. Somewhere that is quiet and peaceful and a place where you are happy to spend your time. Somewhere where no demands are placed on you and you are simply by yourself enjoying the scenery and the quiet. It could be the mountains, the water, a field, the beach, a special room or even just sitting in your car. Any place that relaxes you and makes you breathe a sigh of relief just because you are there and no-one else is there to bother you. No-one else can take this place away from you as it’s just for you to spend some quality time by yourself and enjoy how peaceful life can be.

It’s unfortunate that there are still quite a few misconceptions today about the disease of epilepsy and its many forms. While many have a basic knowledge of the disease as being a seizure disorder, this is usually where their knowledge ends. A true understanding of this condition, and of what it means for the patient, is often lacking. So while we can’t substitute a medical degree in this small article, hopefully we can give you some helpful information about epilepsy that will be useful if you or someone you know suffers from this condition.

First note that epilepsy does exist in many forms. Seizures in the brain can manifest themselves in many different conditions. Many people assume that an epileptic seizure results in the uncontrolled jerking movement that we are often familiar with. However, some seizures can result in an almost paralytic episode, such as staring blankly. You may have also heard of narcolepsy, where a person actually falls asleep for several seconds because of a seizure. And epilepsy can bring about involuntary jerking or spasmodic movements of the body, but not always to the degree that many assume. Sometimes these movements can more resemble twitching or slight spasms. The types of seizures that result in complete loss of body control, called gran mal or tonic-clonic, are very rare.

The causes of epilepsy are also varied, and sometimes cannot be found in a particular patient. However, most are caused by strokes, tumors, head trauma, an abnormality in the brain that is typically present at birth, scarring of the brain tissue, growth, cysts, or infections. Typically cases of epilepsy can be treated with medication if the cause can be traced, however, some more severe cases may require surgery. This procedure is done if it is necessary to remove parts of the damaged brain. Of course this means only if it does not interfere with higher functioning, and if the patient has not responded to medication.

Those with epilepsy cannot control or even anticipate when a seizure will strike. It is a mistake to think that even if they are taking their medication that they can do either. While most can go years, perhaps even the rest of their lives without a seizure when being treated properly, others can have recurring incidents. Those who suffer from this disorder need support and encouragement. They may face restrictions as to being able to handle employment or being granted a driver’s license. It can be a frightening and even downright embarrassing ordeal.

Hopefully those who have friends or family with epilepsy understand their concerns and are able to lend support and encouragement as much as possible. It’s also recommended that the patient be in touch with his or her doctor regularly, as they are always developing new medications and treatment options for this condition.

It starts when acid and other material in the esophagus flow back into the stomach. If this happens rarely or only slightly, you’ll experience heartburn. If this happens frequently, and if there is a lot of backflow, you may experience vomiting, pain in your throat and stomach and extreme discomfort. In either case, you’re exhibiting acid reflux symptoms.

There is a misunderstanding when it comes acid reflux symptoms. Just because you have acid reflux, or GERD as it is also known as, doesn’t mean that your symptoms will occur after you eat every meal or even after you eat meals with high concentrations of acid. The symptoms associated with acid reflux syndrome can disappear for weeks — or even months — at a time. But this doesn’t mean that it won’t come back again.

The most common symptoms of GERD include heartburn and chest pain. The pain in the chest will usually be a burning sensation and will last for one or two hours. The burning will usually only increase when you try to go and lay down. Sometimes the pain and burning will move from you throat into your mouth, leaving behind a sour taste.

Another common symptom is vomiting. What happens here is that the stomach rejects the contents within it and forces them out of the body through the mouth. Stomach acid is perhaps one of the bitterest and most awful tasting experiences you’ll ever have. Not only does it taste horrible, but it also will leave a burning sensation in the throat. In some cases, it will become so forceful that it also comes out through the nose.

Less common, but more severe symptoms of acid reflux include nausea, breathing problems and dysphasia. Dysphasia is the medical term that describes having trouble swallowing. Usually it will feel as a something is stuck in your esophagus and you can’t get your breath. It is easy for some to then go into a panic attack. In some cases, the pain from swallowing is so intense that the person cannot even bring themselves to eat. However, these symptoms are rare.

The worst acid reflux symptom is Barrett’s esophagus. This is where the lining of the esophagus changes and takes on characteristics of the intestine in order to protect the esophagus. Unfortunately, it also increases the chances of getting cancer of the esophagus by 30 times. Needless to say, it is important to talk with your doctor if you are experiencing ongoing symptoms such as these. Failure to act can lead to serious health issues.
